Check out these places and ways other Fabric folks are involved. They are excited to connect with others (like you!) who are also trying stuff and finding their own ways of practicing and being Fabric in action.
Joan Leverenz - Alliance for Housing…buys/builds/provides housing and other social support services to otherwise homeless humans. I'd be happy to collect needed items for the new facility just completed and opening this month. Immediate needs are: Sheet sets (full and twin), Blankets (full and twin), Pillows, Towels and wash clothes, toilet paper. I have known people who have both worked for and been on the board of this organization. I believe it is well run and provides much needed services. Get connected with Joan here!
Katherine Anderson - Reading Partners. They are invited into elementary schools to help students from K to 5th grade who are identified by their teachers as needing a little extra one on one time with someone to help their reading. I’m happy to share my experience volunteering as a tutor, using their curriculum. They have in person and online tutoring opportunities. They teach you everything you need to know to work with these students. Get connected with Katherine here!
Katy Lesiak - Network to support immigrant families. Connect with fabric folks and others with similar interests. Please connect! Would love to meet up (or call) and chat! Get connected with Katy here!
Laureen Harbert - Family Tree Clinic believes each individual person is deserving of not only high-quality and affordable sexual and reproductive health services, but also of affirming, individualized, and respectful care. It’s what people should expect from their health care providers. And that’s exactly what Family Tree delivers. I am happy to talk about Family Tree, its culture and services. Happy to make introductions to staff there. They are always seeking welcome desk volunteers. As a welcome desk volunteer, you’ll greet people, conduct COVID screenings, and direct people to their appointments or meetings. You’re the first warm welcome that patients and visitors encounter as they enter Family Tree Clinic. “We’re looking for people who are passionate about sexual and reproductive healthcare and education that is trans affirming. Your warmth, friendliness, and effective communication are your strengths. We’re seeking dedicated individuals for recurring weekly or biweekly shifts, each lasting between 1.5 to 2.5 hours.” Get connected with Laureen here!
Laureen Harbert - Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) As a Level 1 Trauma Center and a safety net for the community, Hennepin Healthcare offers a broad range of experiences to fulfill your personal goals as a hospital volunteer in a healthcare setting. While most volunteers start with several shifts in the Welcome Services, assisting patients and guests to find their way through our complex campus of specialty clinics and hospital building. Once Welcome Services shifts are completed, you will have the opportunity to volunteer with a variety of different departments, including NICU, Redleaf Center for Family Healing, the Simulation and Education Center. Happy to talk about my experience. My volunteer work at HCMC has focused on holding and reading to babies in the NICU and holding babies for moms who are participating in an intensive outpatient mental health program. But there are many varied volunteer opportunities throughout HCMC. Get connected with Laureen here!
Maia Sletten - ISAIAH | Build Power, Make Change Today. There is a lot going wrong in our communities and our government from my perspective. I often feel too tired or don’t know where to start when it comes to standing up against powers making housing and food distribution inequitable or immigration or policing hurting so many of my neighbors. Isaiah is a group of thousands of Minnesotans across many different backgrounds that is already organized and making change in the dysfunctional systems we are part of. This group of church leaders, mosque leaders, childcare organizers, barber shops and… maybe me and you is already organized and ready for us to plug into and use our power in a meaningful way. If any of this is resonating with you, join me on Sundays after our gathering at Turtle Bread in an Isaiah Fabric Group. Get connected with Maia on Sundays or HERE!
